THE Sydney to Hobart has - for now - escaped the worldwide economic crisis unscathed, with this year's fleet up about 30 per cent on last year's, when 82 yachts started. Despite the huge costs involved in building and preparing yachts for the race, the 108-strong field for this year's race is the third largest since 1998, when 115 yachts competed. In 2004 there were 116 starters.
Matt Allen, the commodore of the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia and owner of the Jones 70 Ichi Ban, said one reason the financial crisis had not affected the race was because new yachts were ordered before it struck.
