THRIVING in the Philippines national league is one thing - surviving in Australia's NBL is another matter.

New Singapore Slingers signing Jason Castro will find out how tough that transition is in 2008-09 after the 21-year-old earned a contract last week.

Castro, a 173cm point guard who has won the Philippines national league MVP award over the past two seasons, is being hailed as a hero by his countrymen as a basketball pioneer who can open doors for others to follow.

"He is only small, but after seeing Jason play in Manila, we have absolutely no doubt that he will be a huge hit in Singapore," said Slingers managing director Bob Turner.

"All the basketball-mad folks in the Philippines will also be tracking his progress on a weekly basis. He has already asked to play in the number 17 jersey, and given the fact we open our season on the 17th of September we hope that is a good omen."
