GAZA CITY: Hamas admitted yesterday its own militants were to blame for a huge blast that killed eight Palestinians, including a four-month-old baby, in Gaza.
The radical Islamic movement ruling Gaza initially said Thursday's blast in the northern town of Beit Lahiya was caused by an Israeli air strike.Militants had responded by launching a barrage of more than 40 rockets and mortars at southern Israel.Hamas' armed wing, the al-Qassam Brigades, yesterday praised the dead as "martyrs", saying the blast was an accident, caused by the premature detonation of an explosive device being prepared by militants in the house. The explosion reduced the two-storey house of senior Hamas commander Ahmed Hamoudeh to rubble.Among the dead were six militants, including three field commanders.Four-month-old Nour Hamoudeh, the daughter of one of the dead field commanders, also died.
